When we came to Germany, we rented a fully furnished apartment for up to one year. Which made the move easier. We simply came with our 12 suitcases and settled in like with an extended AirBnB. However, we could not stay past 360 days (some German regulation).
Since November, I have spent every day online looking for a new apartment. I’ve easily considered around 50 apartments and viewed around 20 in person. We almost took five different apartments, but none seemed just right. We “lost” the perfect apartment to another family. Then found another and was beginning to sign a contract when our future home popped up online.
So we quickly scrambled to contact the owner to schedule a viewing. We were in luck. We knew the area, street, building and even the floor plan as our friends Sarah, Tim and Harper lived in the exact same unit one floor above! Having a personal connection in the building made us more attractive and less unknown or risky.
After a viewing, reviewing the contract with an attorney and negotiating a few points, we had our place secured. We move on June 1. It’s been such a relief.
We will be living right next to Der Volkspark am Weinberg in Mitte, just north of Rosenthaler Platz. We’ll miss the old neighborhood, which is merely a thirty minute walk away, but look forward to exploring another part of the former east Berlin.
Love!
