Our fourth European Halloween was probably our best.

We’ve discovered that instead of recreating the magic of our American Halloweens, we’ve borrowed our favorite parts and added new traditions.

We’ve seen an increase in the extent Germans celebrate Halloween, even since we’ve been here. You see, Halloween isn’t as big, or a long standing tradition, like it is in the US.

This year, we began by continuing a tradition (postponed last year because of COVID) of Isaac dressing up and bowling with his three favorite classmates. Ben joined as well.

Next, our newly formed 5b social committee planned a party for Ben’s class (5th grade, class B) in a classmate’s garden. There were treats, games and a costume contest. The kids had such a great time as did the parents.

On Sunday, Dave and I took the boys, along with their friend, to a pumpkin patch in Brandenburg.

They rode rides, had treats (including quark Bällchen), ate pumpkin soup, looked at the prize winning pumpkins, and brought home pumpkins to carve.

Next came the pumpkin carving and trick or treating.

The boys started in our apartment building and then went to the area bakeries, ice cream shops, Spätis (convenience stores), Apotheken (pharmacies), hotels, restaurants, etc.

It was an epic weekend! Though we still miss our traditions back in Decatur with our family and neighborhood.

Hope you had a fun weekend, too!
