Zugspitze

We first got the idea of going to Zugspitze, Germany‘s high peak, on Disney Plus‘ „Europe from Above“ Germany episode. Have you seen it? It’s worth watching.

It is an hour‘s drive from our holiday home and because it was supposed to storm in the afternoon, I was bound and determined to get their early.

So Dave and I came up with a plan the night before and decided we’d leave by 9:00, which we almost did!

The drive was breathtaking the closer we got to the Alps. Living in fairly flat Berlin made seeing these stellar peaks even more impressive.

We got there by 10:30 and it took us almost 45 minutes waiting in line to take the seven minute ride up to nearly 3000 meters. The clear sky afforded us views of Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland.

Once there, we poked around the main complex, but quickly realized the glacier would be a hit with the boys and it was.

So we took a smaller cable car (it’s quite a complex up there – I’d love to return to ski) to the glacier area.

We enjoyed playing in the snow and then settled in for lunch at the top.

Afterwards, we had a family snow ball fight. Then the boys discovered sledges and a trail and even Dave went down once with Isaac (he wanted more speed!).

We were up at the top for three and a half hours that wizzed by. Another seven minute ride and we were back at the bottom.

Oberammergau

On the way home, we stopped by the town of Oberammergau and went to an Eiscafé for two big Becher (sundaes).

We were gone for eight hours and spent the rest of the evening at home relaxing. The weather held and we enjoyed a dry time in our Garten.
