Würzburg

Today we headed about fifty minutes away to the town of Würzburg, known for many things including its award winning wine.

We’ve enjoyed the Bavarian beer so far, arguably some of the best in the world and perhaps the purest based on strict standards.

Spargelzeit – white asparagus season

German beer purity law is known as the Reinheitsgebot. Introduced in 1516 by Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria, the decree allows for only hops, barley, water and, later, yeast in every Stein.

For 500 years, this recipe has served Bavaria very well, and for the last century, the rest of Germany.

But today was a day for wine. And Spargel (white asparagus) and potatoes with Hollandaise sauce.

Having stuffed ourselves, we spent the day exploring the old city (after four unplanned, quick, and free COVID tests – all negative – we stumbled across the sidewalk center with no line and thought why not), crossing the oldest bridge that spans the River Main, going to a water playground, and walking throughout an expansive park & the adjoining 13th century fortress.

While the day didn’t go exactly as planned (we thought we had booked tickets to the Schloss Residences) we still enjoyed ourselves. Yes, another mega GPS game of hide and seek was played, this time in the gardens. And after this partly cloudy cool weather day that included a brief downpour, we decided to go home for dinner and take it easy after three days of touring .
