Easter Break – Kreuzberg

Since we aren’t traveling this year because of the pandemic, I’ll share some of our day-trip adventures during our two week Easter Break.

Spielplatz #1

Yesterday, we went playground hopping, starting with one right next to the Yorckstraße S-Bahn Station.

First, I have to acknowledge that I am thrilled that our boys, 10 & 8, are still super into playgrounds.

With all of their energy, it’s crucial for them to work it out.

This playground centers around a huge climbing structure. I called the boys little spiders as they skittered up and down.

It also had a large group of men working out, which we had to zig zag through as we played family infection tag.

Spielplatz #2

Around the corner was a second playground that we named the obstacle course playground. We again played family tag, this time with two of us „it“ at the same time. Otherwise, Dave and I would have never caught either boy.

Dave and I left the boys in search of food for lunch. While heading toward a coffee shop for a break, we stumbled across REFUEAT and knew this was our place!

REFUEAT works with refugees from the Middle East and supports integration into the job and offers a stable social environment. Win-Win. The food was excellent!

After settling in for a beautiful picnic lunch, we convinced the boys to move on to another playground.

A promise of a special treat helped to convince them.

Spielplatz #3

We named this next playground The Sahara because it was so hot (76 degrees F/24.5 degrees C) and there was little shade.

With krankiness at its peak, we soon moved towards a cafe for ice cream from a local favorite as well as colas for the boys. We were shocked when they allowed us to use their bathrooms. I’m still not sure if it was officially allowed with the current Berlin Corona rules, but we didn’t complain.

Viktoria Park

Our next stop was the waterfall at Viktoria Park.

On the top of the 66m high hill (formed by glaciers during the last ice age) is a Prussian Memorial. Below, the boys frolicked and later gave a frog PTSD.

We convinced them to take a break and moved on to our fourth playground, also at the park, that we named Spinning Park.

Spielplatz #4

We stayed here for almost two hours. Dave left for a quieter spot in the park so he could make a work call. I didn’t mind waiting on the bench watching the kids play, calling my mom and enjoying our nicest day of the year so far.

After another trip to the waterfall and some time looking for Froggie (who could not be found), we settled in for a dinner of pizza on our picnic blanket at the bottom of the waterfall.

Unable to take a cab home (no one is allowed to ride in the front seat with the driver) I drove us home via a car share.

Needless to say, it was a long, tiring, but wonderful day spent discovering our city. And the tub had a big ring on it that night.

  1. It’s wonderful that they have so many unique play structures in Berlin. And also that many of the structures are appealing for kids . In the U.S. too many communities are happy to just buy stock structures. Or maybe it’s out of the fear of being sued?

What a every kid really wants is to stumble onto something NEW he (or she) hasn’t done before.

    1. You’re right, Lisa. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why they still love playgrounds – – they are so varied and interesting here. Plus, most have sand, lots of sand, which is an awesome sensory experience. Until they take their shoes off at home and there it is everywhere. 😂
