Eiscreme

It’s become an addiction. More than just a treat. But a way of life.

{Ben & Jerry’s}

When we go home from school via the M1 tram, we exit at Rosenthaler Platz. We then walk past two ice cream shops to get to our street. The old standby, Süsse Sünde, as well as Ben & Jerry’s, which opened on July 4.

What started as a Friday treat, has turned into a two to three time a week habit. The boys know that they must use their points to get ice cream on non-Fridays. Which they do. (They earn points for doing chores and for good behavior.)

{Süsse Sünde}

Their usual is a scoop of cookie dough in a regular cone (4 points). A second scoop, which is an infrequent treat, costs an additional four points. A hand-made waffle cone costs another four points.

These ice cream stops have helped to teach the boys about budgeting, saving, spending and math (two scoops plus a waffle cone is 4 x 3).

Another favorite shop that we’ve been visiting for years is Hokey Pokey on Stargarder Straße.

One of the boys’ favorite things to do is to take friends for ice cream.

When Ben & Jerry’s first opened, I avoided it because I wanted to support the local stand instead. But B&J’s is growing on me. It’s yummy (I prefer their mint chocolate chunk) and they have a social conscious.

They were even closed on Friday, September 20 when over 100,000 people met at Brandenburg Tor for the Climate Strikes.

We are in luck. Ice cream shops seem to be staying open later in the season. Some reportedly not closing until December this year. (Food trends seems to be more seasonal here in Berlin.)

Which is great because there is still time for family and friends to come to Berlin to enjoy our favorite spots this year before they close. 😉
