Meißen

On our way home from the Czech Republic back in July, we spent the afternoon in Meißen (Meissen), Germany, just outside of Dresden.

{Meißen gets two thumbs up}

You may have heard of Meißen. It’s claim to fame is porcelain production. This is due to the extensive local deposits of china clay (kaolin) and potter’s clay. In fact, Meißen porcelain was the first high-quality porcelain to be produced outside of the Orient.

{Biergarten lunch in Meißen}

We stopped because we had heard of it’s beautiful old town with a hilltop castle and cathedral, which sounded like a good place to stop for lunch. We also weren’t in a rush to end our final trip of the summer before school was to begin.

{Scenes from Meißen}

So we drove the narrow meandering cobble stone streets of the city until we reached the top.

We settled into a biergarten with an amazing view and enjoyed a hearty lunch followed by Kaffee und Kuchen.

{Fierce game of freeze tag}

Afterwards, we explored the square and launched into a game of freeze tag to work out some energy before hitting the road back to Berlin.

It was a perfect pause. As is the norm while traveling with young children, we missed a lot of the city, but knew that seeing everything wasn’t on our agenda. And that was fine. Maybe we’ll go back another time.
