It’s Fasching time. So dress up. Be merry. Celebrate at school.

But what is Fasching you may wonder. That’s exactly what our family has been asking this week.
In short, it’s Germany’s version of Carnival or Mardi Gras. And it’s apparently celebrated more here than anywhere else in Europe, with the celebration in Köln (Cologne) being the biggest.

So one and all, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, don a costume in preparation for Lent. It must be noted that the tradition may be originally traced back to Pagen days as a way of driving out the evil spirits of winter and encouraging the coming of spring and good crops.

Whatever its beginnings, our boys were simply thrilled to wear their costumes to school for the day.
