Morning Commute

Dave was stuck in Lisbon last night coming home from Morocco, so despite being sick, I was tasked with getting both boys out the door and to school together. On time. Gulp!

We usually take them separately, as Ben’s school starts at 8:10 and Issac must be at his by 9:00. And things just go smoother if we keep them on separate morning schedules.

So after reading a chapter or two of Kitchen Confidential by the late Anthony Bourdain, I went to sleep with an extra early alarm set.

Isaac can be a handful. Well, so can Ben. Combined with my stress about being late, we planned ahead, I drank a quick mug of black tea instead of my normal French press coffee, Isaac skipped his normal routine of making us scrambled eggs, and we were off.

{Heading down the stairs at 7:41}

{Waking down the sidewalk in the predawn grey}

{Taking the elevator up to the U2}

{Patiently waiting two minutes for the next train}

{U2 coming into view}

We bumped into one of Ben’s classmates, Felix, and his sister and dad on the train. They were welcome faces as we’ve spent time together as families outside of school.

As we went through our pre-dawn routine, I realized how lucky we are to be here. We belong. We know people. We’ve figured the tough things out.

We are going to be fine.

And Berlin is home.
