German Reunification Day – October 3

While the Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989, it wasn’t until October 3 the following year that the GDR became a part of the Federal Republic of Germany, thus reunifying East and West.

Twenty eight years later, we celebrate together as school and most stores and offices are closed. Dave, being in Greece for work, is not here, but the boys and I take advantage of a chilly October Day to enjoy our time off.

To better enjoy the many apples we brought home last weekend, I baked an apple crisp while Ben played teacher to Isaac, helping him with his writing.

They then watched some cartoons in German on Kika (German kids channel), the only technology that they are allowed during the school week. Needless to say, they have been watching little to no TV since moving to Berlin.

After lunch, we headed to the Brandenburg Tor and the Tiergarten (Ben likes to call it the tear-garden, sniff sniff) for the celebration. {Road in front of the Brandenburg Tor where the wall once stood. Notice the Reichstag in the background.}

We first fortified ourselves with Pommes mit ketchup und Mayo, stewed mushrooms with cheese, Apfelschorle and Glühwein (it was chilly).

We ended the day’s excursion with a visit to a playground at the Tierpark.

It was a chilly day, but I appreciate how warmly the children are dressed here in Berlin and how willing people are to not let a little cold weather keep them inside.
